Wineries Vineyards Near Me in Eclectic
Whippoorwill Vineyard
4282 County Road 31, Notasulga, AL
Open Year Round
History:
It all started as a glance at an article in a Progressive Farmer'smagazine. A glance then turned into an idea, an idea put into actions. Tim Watkins started it all. He then presented his idea to Chad Ledbetter and then in no time it started. The planning, the discussions, and budgeting were put into motion. Bobby Watkin's land was cultivated and the blacksmith shop occupied, which is now the winery, after several additions. Muscadines were ordered and planted in the winter of 2005. The irrigation system was installed with the shear determination of good friend, Mike Bush the summer of 2006. Then everyone realized that a name was needed for the vineyard. After weeks of going over names, the guys in the vineyard were working as always. It was dusk and the sound of whippoorwills were in the background. Bobby said "Whippoorwill Vineyards" and from then on the name was never an issue. The name was loved because it is so fitting for our little piece of heaven on earth.

Lewis Lakes Vineyards
1075 Chelsea Road, Columbiana, AL
Open Year Round
History:
This simple phrase represents a summation of the business model for Lewis Lakes Vineyards. We are a family owned enterprise and each phase of our wine making process is strictly Alabama....Alabama planted, Alabama grown and nurtured, Alabama harvested, Alabama fermented, Alabama bottled and most importantly, sold at our Alabama winery. The vineyard and winery are located on our 60 acre farm approximately one and one half miles north of the Shelby County Courthouse on Chelsea Road(Highway 47).
The initial inspiration for the vineyard can be traced to a very special group of farmers located in Napa Valley, California, whom also happened to be some of the world's best winemakers. They became familiar with the annual wine auction hosted by Magic Moments for the benefit of seriously ill children and they fell in love with our southern hospitality. Their contributions to the wine auctions and the resulting success stories for the children can never be repaid but their hard work, humility and generosity can be copied. With these ideals in mind, the original vineyard was planted at Lewis Lakes Vineyards in 2007.
The Lewis family, Bill, Bonnie, Michelle, Will & Lauren, operate the vineyards and winery along with the very able assistance of our vineyard manager and resident botanist, Gary Litzinger and his wife Teresa. Additionally, our annual harvests would be impossible without the help of other family and friends, with special thanks to Buddy Stith and Matt & Elizabeth Allison.

Bryant Vineyard
1454 Griffitt Bend Road, Talladega, AL
Open Year Round
Bryant Vineyard is rooted on land which has been in the family since the mid 1800's. For years the farm was owned and operated by Joseph S. Armbrester, grandfather to the Bryants, who found the Coosa Valley ideal for rearing his family and growing cotton as the main crop. Overlooking the beautiful Lake Logan Martin, Bryant Vineyard emerged from a dream in 1965 when only a few vines were planted for family jellies and wine experimentation. Then, in 1981 several varieties of European grapes along with native Alabama muscadine and scuppernong grapes were planted on approximately five acres -- the heart of today's vineyard. We have been an Alabama licensed winery since 1985, receiving the second license granted by the state.

The Fruithurst Winery Company
27091 County Road 49 , Fruithurst, AL
Open Year Round
History:
In 1894 the Alabama Fruit Growers and Winery Association (AFG&W), composed of northern owners came to the area then known as Zidonia, previously Summit Cut, and began negotiations for land. Once the land had been acquired and the people and businesses began to move in, the young town held a contest and the name "Fruithurst" was declared the winner.
The city and surrounding areas were covered by 3000 acres of vineyards and orchards. It was populated by Swedes, Danes, Norwegians, as well as Northerners. Fruithurst was also home to one of the finest hotels in the southeast. The A.F.G.& W. constructed the Fruithurst Inn at a cost of $40,000 in the 1890's. It was 3 full stories, boasting 80 rooms with central steam heat, a restaurant, running water, a billiard room, bowling alley, barber shop, and several business offices. The towns motto "Here We Rest" was carved into the mantle in the lobby.
Due to an exceptional advertising campaign, the town boomed. Within the city of Fruithurst there was a large variety of businesses. Among them were a bank, barber shop, hardware store, a planing mill, laundry, furniture store, pharmacy, livery barn, meat market, grocery, bakery, drug store, and a watch repair. In addition there was a telegraph office, basket and crate factory and several vineyardist businesses.
There were many wineries ranging from the large corporate type to the small independent family operation. These wineries converted the hundred or so varieties of grapes into wines including claret, port, sherry, and muscatel. There were several derivatives of these basic wines. 23,000 gallons of wine were produced in 1898 by the wineries in Fruithurst.
As each year brought an increasing yield of grapes, the profits did not run in proportion to the harvest. The grapes were of excellent quality and they were converted economically into thousands of gallons of choice wines, but there was no good market for the wines. The situation continued to deteriorate until Prohibition closed the last of the wineries in 1919.

Jules J. Berta Vineyards
1409 Darden Avenue, Albertville, AL
Open Year Round
About Us:
Jules J. Berta Vineyards are located atop Sand Mountain in Albertville, Alabama. The vineyards are five acres of vines on a 22 acre farm. The sandy soil and high elevation create a unique southern climate for growing vinifera grapes. The Berta's are dedicated to making quality wines from their Alabama estate grown wine grapes. Controlling this aspect of the wine process enables them to ensure quality at each process from vine to bottle.
The first vines were planted in 1987 by Jules Berta, Sr., whom immigrated from Hungary in 1959. The first plantings were a combination of vinifera and French-American hybrid grapes. In 1993, Jules John Berta moved to Alabama and developed an interest in grape growing and winemaking with his father. Soon, it wasn't long until their hobby turned into an obsession.
In 2005, after the death of his father, Jules Jr. carried on with his own plans of opening a winery. He inherited his fathers dream...FREEDOM, and his passion for life. Hard work and perseverance are among his character traits and what was said to be impossible, growing true wine grapes in Alabama, is now Jules J. Berta Vineyards.
With the Berta's, there is a peace in the vineyard and a pride being a winemaker. There are many educated decisions which affect the wine and at times, no room for mistakes. Harvesting the grapes at their peak is essential to a quality wine. A winemaker wants the balance of sugar, acid, and ph of a grape varietal to be as perfect as it can be in concert.
The Berta's are able to ensure from start (the vine) to finish (the wine) that a balanced and quality wine is produced and bottled. With our wines, you are getting a firsthand experience: a true wine grape which is grown, produced, and bottled at the same location in Albertville, Alabama.
Junavelli Winery
357 Gum Tree Lane, Brewton, AL
About Us:
Junavelli was officially founded in May of 2018, however, our wine making actually started back in 2004 when Roger, the winemaker at Junavelli, first experimented with winemaking as a hobby. After a few hits, and misses, his creation was perfected to become the Sweet Blueberry that is apart of our present line-up.
What started as a hobby soon became a passion. With help from the rest of the family, he ventured out from blueberries, and the garage, and began to experiment with other flavors such as blackberries, strawberries, and muscadine grapes. Many of these recipes have already made their way into our current lineup, and there are many others to look for in the future!
After so many years of wine making equipment taking up most of Lisa’s living room, enough friends and family had visited, tasted the wine, and loved it enough to convince Roger to make enough wine to share with everyone! Thus, the birth of Junavelli Winery. We hope that you share our passion for great wine and greater times. We look forward to your call or visit to the winery!
