The 6 Best Milkshakes in Minnesota!

mn milkshake

Really, whose doesn’t love a good milkshake? In spite of our cold temperatures, we Minnesotans sure do. And we’re fortunate that there’s no lack of creative creameries from which to procure those miky, occasionally malty, frozen delicacies. Here are some our favorites!

The Malt Shop, Minneapolis, MN

The name of the business couldn’t say it much more clearly: You can get really awesome milkshakes at the Malt Shop, a 50th and Bryant institution. Too many flavors and combinations to list have kept folks in South Minneapolis slurping against the bottoms of their glasses for decades, trying to get to that last delectable dollop.

Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop, Stillwater, MN

Burgers, fries, and milkshakes. What more do you need? More milshake! At Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop, when you dine in, they leave you the can on the red-and-white checked tablecloth. It’s like getting two shakes! In spite of their impressive array of flavors, you will not be unhappy with a basic vanilla milkshake at Leo’s.

Flapdoodle’s Homemade Ice Cream, Rochester, MN

With two locations, Flapdoodle’s is one of Rochester’s most popular purveyors of ice cream treats. Their milkshakes, known as Flurricanes, echo the stores’ whimsical, nautical theme and creative flavors, 24 of which are on rotation at any given time. If you get a chance, give the salty caramel a whirl.

The Original Malt Shop, Roseville, MN

A neighborhood fixture for over 30 years, in spite of a recent name change, the Original Malt Shop, is a Roseville favorite with a focus on burgers and shakes. Its classic candy-striped décor has been used as a backdrop for movies, which may explain why one of the tastiest malts is named for an old Hollywood celeb: The Costello. Banana, coffee, and Oreos. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that!

Cold Front, St. Paul, MN

Cold Front is a modern riff on a classic soda fountain. Yes, you can get egg cream or an ice cream soda. But you don’t have to settle for ordinary when it comes to milkshakes. Because this soda fountain is also a gourmet coffee shop, a coffee shake is the way to go. Top off your shake with candied bacon, peanut butter, or saltines

Hi-Lo Diner, Minneapolis, MN

Who says kids get to have all the fun? The Hi-Lo Diner sure doesn’t. With five “adult” milkshakes on its bar menu, these creamy confections will have you smiling just a little bit more. Locally-sourced ice cream and, when possible, booze add to the sweetness.
