Shandel’s Oppenlander Vineyard
P.O. Box 125, Comptche, CA
The unique climate of Comptche, California produces some of Mendocino County's finest Pinot Noir. Fifth generation family owners Bill and Norman Shandel produce sustained yield timber, world class blackberry jam and Pinot Noir from the Oppenlander Vineyard with Dijon clones planted in the natural opening homesteaded in the 1860s. Bill and family still live in the original log home. Known as the Oppenlander Ranch for nearly a century, the Shandel Ranch for over a decade and Surprise Valley Ranch, Inc. since 1963.
The inspiration for Shandel's Oppenlander Vineyards was a single aged grapevine, located in what the Shandel Oppenlander family calls Vineyard Knoll, which survived more than 100 years.
In 1985 Bill and Norman planted a test plot of grapes to see what would grow well. In 1997 Dijon Pinot Noir clones were planted and today 20 acres of Surprise Valley ranchlands are in grapes.
Mercier Winery
4921 Old River Road, Ukiah, CA
MERCIER winery is located on Old River Road, between the communities of Hopland and Ukiah in Mendocino County, California. The vineyard is located on 2 +/- acres of leased land in the McNabb Ranch area, also between Hopland and Ukiah, which is on the west side of Mendocino Valley.
Andrea Swanton and Michael Mercier started the winery in 1998, with the goal of producing a very high quality Merlot that would be rich in flavor, smooth and develop complexity as it aged. They agreed to strict farming and wine production guidelines subject to Mother Nature's whims in any given year.
Michael's passion for wine started at Ohio State University, were he wrote a thesis on vineyard cultural practices for the production of fine wine in 1980. Andrea's love for wine making developed quickly during her time spent in Northern California while the winery was being built, and crystallized upon her first crush.
Roma’s Vineyard
10001 Lone Tree Ridge Road, Boonville, CA
As a lad, I grew up in Tivy Valley, a small valley in Southern California, at the edge of the Sierra foothills at the outflow of the Kings River. My family had a small farm, and the Kings River flowed through it, it was a tropical paradise. We lived and swam in those warm waters, the scent of ripe blackberries and the bloom of buttonwillow wafted through the air. My mother made blackberry wine. The wild brambly nose of Pinot Noir still takes me back to those days of blackberry wine.
As the pages of time whisk by, I found myself the owner of a full-service air charter named Alaska Travel Air with a DeHavilland Beaver Floatplanes fleet fulfilling people's exotic dreams of high adventure in faraway places. Fishing - Hunting - Flightseeing, with a base of operations off Lake Hood on the Anchorage International Airport, the most extensive seaplane base in the world!
In between flights, I was invited to lunch by a young lady who has become my wife for the past 42 years, Ms. Suzi Arago. The restaurant, Simon and Seafort's, was located in the suburbs of Anchorage. My date ordered a bottle of Robert Mondavi Pinot Noir. At the time in 1978, Mondavi was pretty at the top of the heap. Perhaps it was the Blackberry wine or maybe cupid's arrow; however, Pinot Noir, with its Blackberry essence, has been like a guiding light.
Once my nine lives were spent, it was apparent that a more suitable adventure was in order, so Suzi and I settled upon winemaking. To study the art, we lived in Napa Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Then Lord and behold, we showed up in Anderson Valley! Never before had we gone from one boutique winery to the next and found a pleasant Pinot Noir consistency.
With life still turning the pages, we found ourselves immersed in the distinguished pedigree of Roma's Vineyard. We knew if we were to enter this kingdom of the high art of excellence, and like Mondavi, put it, “We must cultivate a passion for perfection.”
After purchasing the property on Lone Tree Ridge, we commenced developing the vineyard. We turned to Ted Bennett and Deborah Cahn of Navarro Vineyard for Pommard cuttings and consulted with Josh Chandler of Lazy Creek Vineyards for his expertise. Be that as it may, with Josh's knowledge, I as well obtained the former owner and founder of Lazy Creek Wines—Hans Kobler’s old-world technology to boot. After nineteen years of winemaking with ten years under the tutelage of Josh Chandler, I am confident to be standing at the threshold of excellence, making great wines from our vineyard above the clouds.

The combination of rich volcanic soil, high elevation farming, and some of the cleanest air in California are what make the Red Hills Appellation famous for yielding grapes with thick skins and greater tannins, which in turn produce intense yet elegant wines. Located on the valley floor, nestled in the Big Valley Appellation, long known for its superb Sauvignon Blanc production, our Sauvignon Blanc vines thrive in alluvial soils.
Two Brothers Vineyard
3210 & 3488 Highway 53, Clearlake, CA
Located in the Clear Lake Appellation of the Lake County AVA, Two Brothers Vineyard is the result of a primitive geological event. When the ancient volcano Mt. Konocti erupted it formed steep mountain slopes in the surrounding area, with well draining volcanic soils. Two Brothers Vineyard, constructed along a mountain slope, benefits from this ancient geological event.
Many winemakers have observed similarities between its terroir and that of the La Mancha wine region of Central Spain, and Campania, the Italian wine region east of Naples.
Icaria Winery
27750 Asti Road, Cloverdale, CA
Icaria Creek Winery & Vineyards can be found just to the north of Silver Oak in Alexander Valley, Sonoma County. In 1989, Wayne & Barbara Smith purchased a 50 acre parcel and planted one of the first hillside vineyards in Sonoma County to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This fruit is sold to many prestigious wineries. Their youngest son Jeff finished his Business degree at Fresno State and moved back to Sonoma County to start a small boutique winery. Icaria Creek Winery was started in 1998, and the first vintage release, a 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley earned 4 stars from Restaurant Wine Publisher Ronn Weigand. Jeff worked at a small Pinot Noir winery for a couple of years, learning the ropes in the business and production side while crafting his winemaking skills at nights and weekends at Icaria. Jeff oversees multiple picks across the rocky knoll hillside vineyard in order to achieve optimal ripeness and structural foundation. Clone 337 is used on the Cabernet, this produces a loose cluster and small berry which helps create some of the most concentrated and beautiful wines in the world. In the past few years Icaria Winery has purchased fruit from a few other distinct hillside vineyards across Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley. The wine is carefully aged for 12-24 months in select French and Hungarian Oak barrels and 6-12 months in the bottle, this help achieve the renowned elegant and exquisitely balanced style.
We offer private wine tastings "by appointment only". Contact Jeff Smith, Winemaker at 707-486-9623 or Helen Smith, Sales & Marketing at (707) 486-3979.

Lago di Merlo Vineyards
3495 Skaggs Springs Road, Geyserville, CA
Harry Merlo Sr. began at the age of five crushing grapes with his feet below the railroad tracks in the Italian section of Stirling City, California. His Father, Giuseppe Merlo, an Italian immigrant, was considered the wine steward of the High Sierra lumber town. He would set a washtub on the woodshed floor and dump into it a 50-pound lug of zinfandel grapes and young Harry would begin to stomp. Thus began his association with the wine industry. Harry has often said that he qualifies as a connoisseur of wine because he has purple feet.
The tradition continued with the acquisition of Harry’s vineyard near Geyserville, California in 1965. In the mid 1960’s he delivered his first truckload of grapes to Italian Swiss Colony Winery. They weighed his truck and gave him a receipt priced at $50 per ton.
Family interest in winemaking led his son, Harry Jr., to study viticulture and enology at California State University, Fresno. Following graduation, Harry Jr. ultimately became Manager of Lago di Merlo Vineyards & Winery at the Merlo Ranch in Sonoma County. Under his third generation leadership, the Merlo’s expanded the vineyard to over 200 acres.

His sons, Fred and Jim, carried on the tradition and produced wine in the “Dr. Pierces” barn on Highway 101 for many years until the winemaking operation closed in the 1970's. Jim’s youngest son, Mike, expanded the grape growing business which he continues to operate today under Mazzoni Vineyards.
