Author Izaak Walton once famously referred to fly fishing as “a contemplative man’s recreation.” If you’re looking to leave the stress of the world behind and focus on something a little more pleasant, there are few better activities than some quality fly fishing. This activity is believed to have originated around the year 200, and has been popular among thinking men and women ever since. Pennsylvania plays host to some of the best fly fishing opportunities in the country, no matter what area of the state you hail from. Check out our five must-visit fly fishing locations in the Keystone State, and let your worries drift away!

1.Slate Run

Slate Run is known in fly fishing circles not only simply within Pennsylvania, but globally, as one of the best spots around. A freestone mountain brook brimming with trout, this location is perfect if you’re looking to both relax and reel it in. The area is open year round, but becomes particularly glorious in the spring and summer.

2.Penns Creek, State College, PA

As the state’s longest and biggest limestone stream, Penns Creek is suitable for fly fishers of all skill levels. Visit if you’re after wild and stocked trout, or smallmouth bass, in one of the loveliest locations in state.

3.Oil Creek at Oil Creek State Park

This tributary of the Alleghany River provides great fly fishing, and beautiful vistas to top it off. This northwestern location has two designated, delayed harvest areas that allow for fishing year round, perfect to keep your skills and interest sharp!

4.LeTort Spring Run, Carlisle, PA

LeTort Spring Run is famous in fly fishing circles as being the possible birthplace of American-style dry fly fishing, making it not only a great location to get some bites, but a little piece of sporting history as well. Beware, this Carlisle spot is not for the faint of heart, and presents a challenge to even experienced fishermen.

5.Cedar Run

Cedar Run can be difficult to access, but once you do, it's oh-so-worth-it. A quality freeform stream with ample wild trout, Cedar Run is worth a visit, even if it means a bit of a drive and hike.
