Classic Diners in Kansas: A Taste of Nostalgia
When Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel introduced Superman, they had him grow up on a farm in small town Kansas. Why? Because there aren’t many places more American than Kansas farms. Diners represent this same sense of Americana; whether you’ve been going to the same spot for 50 years or trying out a trendy new place, the following awesome diners are all about nostalgia.
Bobo's Drive In, Topeka, KS
Bobo’s Drive In continues the age-old American tradition of the drive-in diner. Known as “One of the 8 Wonders of Kansas Cuisine,” the diner opened originally in 1948 and has been in the same spot since 1953. Check out their cheeseburgers and handmade onion rings to be transported to diner-food heaven.
Gella's Diner & Lb. Brewing Co, Hays, KS
As far as diners go, Gella’s is unique. Part of the fabric of Hays, Kansas, this award-winning diner is attached to Lb. Brewing Company. That means they always have access to new brews on tap in addition to their seasonal menus.
Ladybird Diner, Lawrence, KS
The Ladybird Diner is known for its warm and unique atmosphere. If you’re interested in classic flavors with an atmospheric twist, this is the spot for you. Don’t be frightened off by the word “atmospheric”: we mean it in the best way possible, like how a favorite’s house has a warm and one-of-a-kind vibe to it.
Doo Dah Diner, Wichita, KS
The Doo Dah Diner has been voted Wichita’s Best Breakfast for the last three years. The owners were awarded the 2017 Restauranteurs of the Year award by the Kansas Restaurant and Hospitality Association.
Stacy’s Restaurant, Junction City, KS
Stacy’s Restaurant in Junction City, Kansas, notes on their website that they don’t have a dress code. While we wouldn’t recommend showing up in underwear, we suppose that’s on the menu… in addition to their excellent breakfast and lunch items. They’re not looking to reinvent the wheel here and that’s just fine: sometimes, comfort food means getting a great version of exactly what you expect. That’s where Stacy’s Restaurant shines.
