Curling is a team sport played on ice where participants slide stones toward a target area, which is segmented into four concentric circles, known as the "House". It's often compared to shuffleboard, but on ice. The game is played between two teams, each consisting of four players.
The stones, made of granite, each weigh around 19.1 kilograms (about 42 pounds) and are polished for precision. Each player takes turns sliding the stones towards the house, aiming to reach the center or position them strategically.
A crucial aspect of curling is the "sweeping" action, where team members use brooms to brush the ice in the path of a traveling stone. This activity reduces friction, helping stones to travel further and curl less, allowing the players to influence the stone's direction and distance.
Points in curling are scored based on the number of stones closer to the center of the house than the opponent's nearest stone after all have been delivered. The team with the highest score at the end of the allotted ends (innings) wins the game.
