Glendo Lake Trail Race 30K and 10K
WE ARE BACK! Join the Outdoor Enthusiasts of Converse County as we bring back the GLTR for a 4th year. It's a trail race developed by trail runners keeping not only the veteran and novice racer in mind but the entire family. Never ran on a trail before? Unfamiliar with the Glendo State Park's trail system? Want to just go on a hike with some new friends? Try out our 10K event. Eager for something a bit more challenging? Need a longer training run for that ultra you signed up for in November or December? The 30K is calling your name.
But as always, we have some changes. Most notably is the date. It has been a bit toasty in the past so we are moving to mid-October. It could be in the 90s or it could be snowing...your guess is as good as ours. It also wouldn't be fair to NOT alter the course so...we changed it! Both race courses will feature Glendo State Park's newest trail addition: Moonriver.
Schedule:
8:50 am – 30K pre-race briefing
9:00 am – 30K start
9:20 am – 10K pre-race briefing
9:30 am – 10K start
Course Info:
The race start and finish are located at Two Moons Campground, which is on the Glendo Park Rd just East of the marina and past the park headquarters at 397 Glendo Park Rd. Look for the campground shelter located adjacent to the park both of which are visible from the road.
If you’ve participated with our race in the past, you should already know what is coming. COURSE CHANGES!!! Seems we have folks either get lost, go the wrong way or cut the course either intentionally or not. I've come to expect and accept this. So with that being said, I "feel" that I have finally made a 10K and 30K course that is 93% impossible to get lost on thanks to Glendo State Park's newest trail: Moonriver.
30K Course:
Loops! We are introducing loops this year in an attempt to remove course confusion. The 30K will consist of the 10K course...x3!
Simply enough, right?!
The start line will remain the same at the Two Moons campground shelter area. Racers will have only a ¼ mile of pavement to sort yourselves out until you turn onto the Broken Bow trail at trailhead (TH 30). If you raced with us in the past, that part is the same until you reach TH 34 where you will head left onto Two Moon Loop trail. Here you will experience amazing views of the lake if you’re not in a hurry…just please pay attention and try not run off the ledge! After following Two Moon Loop trail around to the first campground road entrance, you’ll head across the road onto Buffalo Run trail which will allow you to really pick up some speed with some spectacular views of Laramie Peak! Following running Buffalo Run in its entirety, you will turn down onto 91 Gigawatt trail at TH 40, cross the road and at TH 50, run onto Renegade on your way to the Wetlands Trailhead aid station. Here you'll have bathrooms, shade, food and beverages...and hopefully a mini party! It's approximately mile 4 for the start/finish line and easily accessible by car if your loved ones want to drive down and cheer you on! DISCLAIMER: If anyone in your party is planning on driving down....PLEASE tell them to watch out for runners on the road as ALL racers have four road crossings per loop!
After leaving the Wetlands Trailhead aid station, you'll start heading up on Root Canal at TH 45 until you reach the turnoff for Moonriver. You'll come to an unmarked cairns and head right. We'll mark it...but you gotta follow it! At this time of this publication, there isn't an updated trail map online with the Moonriver trail in place so if you are looking at what I'm looking at right now (https://www.uwyo.edu/rec/outdoor-program/_files/docs/glendo-trails-map.pdf), trust us....its not listed but Moonriver indeed exists! Follow the course markings until you make your 3rd road crossing to another unmarked cairns and hit TH 45. Hand a right up to TH 43 where you'll leave Reflector Loop and head onto Broken Bow for the 4th and final road crossing for the loop to TH 44.
Now...PAY ATTENTION!
Remember reading when we mentioned the new course is 93% impossible to get lost on? Well, I'm a gambling kind of person and will be that someone is going to run up to TH 34 and just keep on trucking onto their 2nd loop.
DO NOT DO THIS!!!
All 30K racers must follow the signage to TH 30 and follow the trail to the start/finish line area to the Two Moon Campground aid station to check in and out of before repeating the loop exactly like the first loop. If we don't have you checked in and out....you don't get credit for the loop and just made your race a bit longer. Complete the loop 3 official times and you'll be an official 2024 30K Glendo Lake Trail Race finisher! Pictured below is the official Course Map & Elevation for one 10K loop.
Yes...the trails will be marked but be aware that we do not have the authority to close any trails or place a “WRONG WAY” sign in the middle of a trail. Remember that it is a public state park and other runners, hikers and/or mountain bikers may be on the trail at any given point. We can not hold your hand and guide you through the course. Please do your part to look at the Glendo State Park trail map in conjunction with the above description.
10K Course:
And now for the 10K! If you are new to trail running or to Glendo’s trails, or frankly don’t feel motivated to run 18+ miles, consider the 10K. We don’t believe in time limits or race cutoffs so grab a pair of hiking boots or trekking poles and check out this distance. The start line is at the Two Moon Shelter but with a later start time than the 30K racers. We give you ¼ mile of pavement to separate the tortoises from the hares before converging onto the Broken Bow trailhead (TH) 30. If you raced with us in the past, that part is the same until you reach TH 34 where you will head left onto Two Moon Loop trail. Here you will experience amazing views of the lake if you’re not in a hurry…just please pay attention and try not run off the ledge! After leaving the Wetlands Trailhead aid station, you'll start heading up on Root Canal at TH 49 until you reach the turnoff for Moonriver. DO NOT DO THIS!!!
For the love of all us working our tails off to make this an enjoyable eland pleasantly memorable event, follow the signage to TH 30 and follow the trail to the start/finish line area to the Two Moon Campground area. We honestly don't want y'all to get lost and will do everything in our power to keep you safe and out on course but ultimately it is up to you! Please do your part!
