Sammy Miller and The Congregation are dedicated to bringing generosity back to jazz and making art more accessible to people. Sammy Miller, a Juilliard-trained drummer, has been recognized as "the perfect player scholar” by The Wall Street Journal.
Over the past decade, he has worked to make jazz more accessible to a new generation of listeners and students. From Lincoln Center to The White House, TEDx to The Newport Jazz Festival, Sammy Miller and The Congregation have been headlining prominent jazz festivals for over a decade. The Congregation specializes in joyful jazz - music that uplifts and feels good.
Their most recent album, "Joyful Jazz at Lincoln Center," was released in 2023. Having worked with over 60,000 students in 45 states, Miller launched the music education platform PLAYBOOK. This platform offers teachers the tools they need to inspire lifelong musicians. Recently, Miller shared his music education philosophy in a New York Times op-ed titled “We’re Teaching Music to Kids All Wrong”.
This incredible group will be serving as adjudicators for the North Central Washington Music Educators Association fall Jazz Festival, held at ICCA where jazz bands and choirs from schools throughout the NCW come together for an awesome festival experience. And then there will be an incredible evening concert open to the public - a traditional sit-down performance on November, 7th. Don’t miss your chance to be inspired by these phenomenal musicians!
A little bit about the Icicle Creek Visiting Artist Series:
Join us in inspiring the next generation of creators through the Icicle Creek Visiting Artist Series. This incredible series brings talented performing artists from across the country and beyond to not only showcase their work but also share their creative processes with students. These artists visit schools, engaging with and performing for students. Their visit culminates in a captivating concert at Icicle Creek’s Snowy Owl Theater for the whole community to enjoy! Attending these concerts directly supports the work that we do here at ICCA to creatively engage with the students of our valley. We thank you for being a part of this!
