8 Perfect Vermont Getaways!

vt getaways

The perfect getaway in Vermont usually involves taking in the natural beauty of the Green Mountain State. But we like to mix it up a little. Some of these places will be familiar and some off the beaten path. From rustic cabins to snowmobile adventures, you’ll find something you’ll love in Vermont.

Robert Frost Mountain Cabins, Ripton, VT

Built in the similar solitude that Frost enjoyed while he lived in Ripton, this collection of cabins is located on 112 acres of peaceful Green Mountain Forest wilderness. Soak in the outdoor hot tub overlooking the mountains or relax inside with a fully stocked kitchen, gas fireplace, screened porch, and Wi-Fi. Some of the more charming touches include flashlights, emergency lanterns, first aid kits, and sewing kits in every rental.

The Willoughvale Inn and Cottages, Orleans, VT

As the story goes, before Robert Frost had attained notoriety as Vermont’s most famous bard, he and his family camped on the land that was one day to become the Willoughvale. Though the poet never stayed at the inn, he was struck, as so many are, by the natural beauty of Willoughby Lake and her encroaching mountains. Now, the Willoughvale offers year-round lakeside cabins and a bustling inn and restaurant in the remote destination of the Northeast Kingdom.

Vermont Snowmobile Rentals, VT

Take in the grandeur of Vermont’s pastoral hills and bucolic forests in a whole new way. Glide along mountain trails or opt for more challenging terrain in a high-tech snow machines. Stop at outlooks to observe pristine wilderness vistas along the way as you get away to the Green Mountain State’s backcountry.

Sterling Ridge Resort, Jeffersonville, VT

If seclusion is what excites you, Sterling has got your number. Enjoy a romantic getaway on 372 pristine acres of idyllic Vermont field and forest. Log cabins offer a full kitchen, Jacuzzi tub, and a wood-burning fireplace. Paddle or kayak on the 14-acre pond or commune with nature along the many hiking trails that meander through the bucolic Green Mountain wilderness.

The Trapp Family Lodge, Stowe, VT

Made famous for fleeing Nazi-occupied Austria as depicted in the movie, “The Sound of Music,” the von Trapps settled in Vermont after touring America. In Stowe, they established their old-world getaway, featuring European hospitality and amenities like spa services and treatments, an on-site Bavarian-style restaurant, sleigh rides, afternoon tea & cookies, an on-site brewery, and access to a vast collect of cross-country ski trails.

Mount Mansfield, Sunset Ridge Trail, Underhill, VT

Get away for a day along Mount Mansfield’s Sunset Ridge Trail. Bring the family, and make it an afternoon hike. This brief escape features classic, rocky ridge hiking and culminates with the highest peak in Vermont’s Green Mountains at 4,393 feet. Two-hundred acres of rare alpine flora and two miles or ridge-top hiking beckons hikers and naturalists of all ages.

Equinox Mountain, Manchester, VT

It takes some getting to, tucked away in the south-west corner of Vermont, but, at 3,848 feet above sea level, Mount Equinox is the only mountain in the U.S. that features a continuous paved road to the top. The peak, the highest in the Taconic Mountain Range, boasts panoramic views of the Green, White, Adirondack, Berkshire mountain ranges, and in a little over five miles, it climbs more than 2,000 feet.

Maidstone State Park, Maidstone, VT

Escape to wilderness seclusion at the most remote park on Vermont State Park’s list. When the last glaciers melted around 12,000 years ago, they formed the deep, cold crater known as Maidstone Lake. Filling with water over time, it is now home to trout, salmon, and a nesting loon population, which is still a “species of concern” in the state.
