22nd Original Community Theatre Musical with special guest Rupert Reyes
Our 22nd original Musical - Mas Que Pantalones - is inspired by the life of Luisa Capetillo - Labor Union leader, activist, writer, anarchist, and spiritist - who tirelessly defended the rights of women and poor agricultural workers. Despite her important contributions in the early 20th century as a passionate Labor Movement leader, she is most popularly remembered as the 1st woman in Puerto Rico to wear pants.
Based in oral and documented history, this historical fiction is written in English, Spanish, and Taino. Set in the mid 1970s and circa 1917, it honors early 20th century female labor union leaders who fought for the rights of women and laborers and opened the doors to feminism in Puerto Rico! Traditions inherited from our Boricua Taino ancestors are also included!
Original script and music by Tekina-eiru Maynard, our play features original Jibaro, Salon (Vals & Mazurka), Plena, Bomba, and Taino music.
Special Guest Rupert Reyes - celebrated Latino playwright and actor, and director - joins our cast of actors, dancers, musicians, and Cocobale - STICKS & MACHETE FIGHTERS - to bring history to life!
