The Newport Bermuda Race, organized by the Bermuda Race Foundation, stands as the oldest regularly scheduled ocean race and one of the few international distance races globally. Established in 1906, this biennial event spans 636 miles and is steeped in history, embodying the essence of true seamanship and navigation skills. The race's purpose, as articulated by Cruising Club of America Commodore Herbert L. Stone in 1923, is to "foster the design, construction, and sailing of small seaworthy yachts while promoting deep-water cruising and nurturing a love for seamanship among amateur sailors."
The 53rd edition of the Newport Bermuda Race is slated for June 21 2024, continuing its legacy of attracting a diverse fleet of participants. In 2022, 220 boats entered the race, while the centennial event in 2006 saw the largest fleet with 265 boats. The race draws sailors from across North America and beyond, with representatives from 23 different countries participating in 2016. This global appeal underscores the race's significance as a premier event in the sailing world, offering sailors an unparalleled opportunity to showcase their skills and passion for the sport on an international stage.
