West Penn Trail Triathlon
An adventure race like no other... paddle, peddle and pace from the Conemaugh River to the West Penn Trail in beautiful, historic Saltsburg, PA. Solo Participants must be at least 15 years of age. However, a Child aged 12 -14 can participate on a team as long as that child does not compete on the paddle leg by their self. No e-bikes.
Leg One: The Paddle
The race begins on the Conemaugh River. Racers will launch a kayak or canoe from the Conemaugh Dam and paddle 7-miles downriver to Historic Saltsburg. The paddle consists of mostly flat water with some Class I ripples. We will have volunteers to assist racers entering and exiting the water. All participants must wear a PFD (life jacket).
Leg Two: The Ride
The cycling portion of our race is a 14-mile trail ride to Conemaugh Dam and back. The first 3.5 miles of the ride is on a crushed stone rails to trail bike path, The next 3.5 miles consist of some short steep hills, some gravel sections, some rolling hills and a short, paved section around the Conemaugh Dam parking area where you then return back on the trail. The trail when dry can be navigated on any type of bike. Road bikes, cross bikes, hybrids, mountain bikes and tandems are all acceptable. However, if it is a rainy day, a road bike will not be your best choice to peddle. Participants must wear a helmet during the bike leg and headphones/earbuds are not permitted.
Leg Three: The Run
The final stage of the triathlon is a true 5k. The trail leads runners along the Kiskiminetas River to Blackleggs Creek on the Kiski Section of the West Penn Trail. You’ll cross the Jack Maguire Bridge and turn around to make your way back to the finish line.
