Dawson's Orchards
122 Petersburg Road, Enon Valley, PA
Since 1946, family values have been at the core of our business. Our Mission is provide you with the highest quality produce as well as outstanding service.
George and Janet Dawson established Dawson's Orchards in 1946, raising chickens and growing fruit. By the early 1960's, the chicken business flew the coop and the fruit was here to stay. The Dawson's three oldest children chose careers away from the farm, but in 1981 their youngest child, Carolyn, and her husband Kevin made the decision to return to the farm after college.
Kevin embraced the farm, updating the plantings and quickly growing the wholesale segment. In addition to the orchard work, they were raising three children of their own. Kevin died suddenly in July of 2000, but by the grace of God the trees kept producing fruit and customers continued to buy it. In 2008, Carolyn remarried to Scott McQuiston, who now coordinates the orchard's food safety department.
The third generation and their spouses are also working hard, each bringing their own incredible talents to the orchard and the community - all while raising up the fourth generation. You can be sure our family at Dawson's Orchards is braced for the challenges of the future and Lord willing, we will be here to provide healthy, safe, delicious choices to you and your family for years to come!
Apple Castle
277 State Route 18, New Wilmington, PA
Few farms have the longevity and tradition of Apple Castle, a family orchard that has been growing apples for over 150 years. Six generations of the Johnston family have dedicated their lives to growing apples and the lifestyle that goes with it, and as a seventh generation appears on the scene, the family shows no signs of slowing.
Through the generations, Apple Castle has always strived to provide high-quality fruit and vegetables at fair prices. In 1861, Josiah Smith Johnston settled along what is now Route 18 in New Wilmington. The original plot was much larger, but included the land the family still lives on and operates today. The original operation included both an orchard and dairy cows.

Soergel Orchards
2573 Brandt School Road, Wexford, PA
History:
Our family farm's history began in the mid 1850's when a German immigrant by the name of John Conrad Soergel settled on this very spot and began planting apple trees. The apples were sold wholesale for the first half of the 1900's, but in the mid 1960's a severe spring frost left very few apples on the trees. At this time, Warren and I decided it was not worth the trip to town everyday to sell the few apples we had. We started our own roadside stand at the corner of Brandt School Road and Wexford Bayne Road (now Route 910). When the business outgrew the original building, a larger stand was built. Then, in 1973, Interstate 79 claimed 14 acres of apples. Nevertheless, our family felt it was time for further expansion. In the early 1970's, the present market was established.
Our farm consists of 450 acres in several different locations. The original house, located next to the market, burned to the ground in 1911, but was rebuilt on the same foundation. Around the market we have planted a variety of fruit trees, mostly apple, but also cherry, plum and peach. Richard and Mary Kay live off of Wexford Run Road and have many varieties of apple trees on their farm. Both Reed and Danetta and Linda and Larry own farms one mile apart in Connoquenessing Township in Butler County. The corn, pumpkins, more peaches and many of the garden vegetables are grown at these farms. Reed and Danetta also raise our farm fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving. Randy and Beth live around the corner from the market and their main interest is the greenhouse end of the business. Randy started with several greenhouses as a complement to the market in 1980. Since then, the Garden Center and other greenhouses have been added.
In 1986 we began our own rack and cloth cider press, which Larry operates. He presses at least two times a week and more often in the fall. We also supply apple cider to Arrowhead Wine Cellars who produce our delicious apple wine that we sell in our wine shop. A pasteurizer was added in 1997 to ensure a completely safe product for our customers. The fall of 1987 saw the expansion to a full-scale bakery and deli department. Delicious freshly baked pies, cookies and pastries are available seven days a week.
Naturally Soergel's was opened in the Spring of 2009 to include a full line of wheat-free, gluten-free, allergen-free, natural products to meet the growing special dietary needs of our community. Our newest addition, in the fall of 2010, was the opening of our furniture room, housing beautifully crafted pieces from the Pennsylvania and Ohio Amish.
Shenot Farm and Market
3754 Wexford Run Road, Wexford, PA
History:
The Shenot Family came to the Wexford area in the mid-1850's. During the early years of the farm, the operation included dairy cows, hogs and chickens, crops including apples, potatoes, grains and a few garden vegetables. Over the years each generation has focused on specific crops or products. Unfortunately, little is known about the earliest family members. Edward N. Shenot (1886-1948) grew significant acreage of potatoes. He was also known for his hard cider operation.
Edward's son, John (Bill) Wilson Shenot became renowned for growing sweet corn. At this time there was a small roadside stand along Wexford Run Road where produce was sold seasonally along with milk. In the 1960's, Bill sued the Allegheny County Health Department for the right to sell raw milk. After several defeats and appeals, Bill finally won the case in the Pennsylvania State Supreme Court. Shortly thereafter, Bill sold his dairy cows to make way for his son's crazy idea of focusing on fruits and vegetables. Bill was also a strong advocate for modern farming practices that build healthy ecosystems. He was also active in the earliest soil conservation efforts that introduced contour strip farming and cover cropping to the farm.
Bill's son, Edward (Ed) Wilson Shenot, joined his father in the operation after earning a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture from Penn State in 1971. This was a time of transition as cows, hogs and chickens were replaced with tomatoes, peppers and melons. Orchards have always been a major part of the farm with apples being at the core. However, Bill & Ed (father, son) were among the few in the region to have success growing peaches and nectarines.
Ed inherited the land from his parents and for many years worked along side his wife, Mary Lou and sister, Dianne. While Dianne had a full time teaching job, she eventually stepped away from the business to make room for future generations. Eventually, Ed and Mary Lou expanded the market to what you see today. This generation brought about changes to how our products were sold; what was once a small roadside shed quickly became a busy retail market built in 1972, then doubling in size in 1993. The growth of the retail market eliminated the need to haul extra produce to Pittsburgh's strip district. The business also expanded to include homemade fudge and hayrides to the pumpkin patch.
Ed and Mary Lou have 3 children (Heather, Angie and Rob) and 5 grandchildren. All of their children reside in the Wexford area, though Rob is the only one involved in the farm full time. Ed and Mary Lou live on the farm in the home they built in 1973 and are both still involved in the day to day operations of the business.
Today Ed and Rob (father, son) focus mainly on the production of a near 80 acres of sweet corn and assorted vegetables, our 20 acres of orchard and of course, our award winning apple cider! Mary Lou, Ed's wife, makes over 50 flavors of her signature fudge including caramel and fudge dipped apples as well as kettle corn. Leah, Rob's wife, oversees the events that we host throughout the year and focuses on the marketing of the business.
Rob, his wife, Leah and daughter, Pepper live on the farm in their house that Rob built in 2005. Rob graduated from Penn State University in 2001 with a degree in Horticulture. He moved back to the farm and applied his newfound knowledge of farm technology to the business. He and Leah married in 2014 and baby Pepper came along in 2016. Together, they look forward to what the farm holds for their future.

Brown's Orchard and Cider Company
267 Southview Rd, McDonald, PA
Brown's started as a family business back in 1933 and had grown into a large commercial apple production site into the 1990's.
Now Brown's focuses on producing great apple varieties many unknown or hard to find but great for eating and baking. They also make great fresh cider.
As many customers tell us, once they’ve had our sweet apple cider, no other will do. Unlike the very prevalent practice of contracting out to larger more commercial suppliers, we press Brown’s Cider here on site. It is made in small batches using a cider press dating back to the 1930’s.
Randy Brown learned the craft of cider-making from his Grandpap Brown and has continued to hone his skill. Experience has taught him how to select the apple varieties and quantities for each batch to get the taste he’s aiming for, depending on the time of year. Similar to a wine sommelier, he has a knack for creating and blending a cider that always delivers a mouthful of apple goodness even though no two batches are ever exactly alike.
Norman's Orchard
2318 Butler Logan Road, Tarentum, PA
About Us:
Norman's Orchard began production in 1958. The orchard was founded by Robert K. and Sara Norman, who purchased the farm in 1947 with a farm house and a Sweitzer-style log bank barn. The farm was part of a Revolutionary War land grant to John Corman, later owned for many years by the Clark family, and was adjacent to the Norman homestead owned by Squire Thomas Norman, Jr. Crawford Run Road was originally known as Normantown Road, and the village along Crawford Run Creek was known as Normantown. (It is now part of Creighton.)
Most of the orchard lies on a westerly and southern slope, which is ideal for a northern orchard, as it receives warm sun in the winter and the prevailing westerly breezes moderate temperatures all year long.
In the beginning, Norman's Orchard sold all types of fruit, berries and vegetables from a roadside stand. The orchard also sold Christmas trees and firewood in the wintertime.
Jeff and Leslie Norman are the current owners of the orchard. Jeff grew up on the orchard and enjoys all aspects of orchard management. Jeff spent his work career as a chief executive officer in hospitals and is still a partner in a health care consulting firm. Jeff and Leslie add a few varieties of heirloom apples and cherries each year to ensure continued vitality of the available fruit.
In the last few decades the importance of heirloom varieties has grown as consumers desire a greater variety of flavor and freshness in their fruit. We consider it a blessing from God to be able to provide our customers with fresh fruit, apples ,pears, grapes, cherries and berries.

Shaffer's Pumpkin Patch
1160 Meadville Pike, Franklin, PA
About Us:
Shaffer's Pumpkin Patch was started in 1985 by Rob and Rebecca Shaffer with the help of their parents Orah and Dorothy Shaffer. They raised pumpkins for a 4-H project and had a few left over. They borrowed old clothing from their parents and created Ma and Pa farmer in their Grandma's front yard. That was such a hit with the neighbors that each year characters have been added.
In 1990 the 4-H club called the BSS'ers built a maze from corn stocks as a fund raiser. This tradition continued untiol 2002 when the mini maze was taken over by the Kappa PSi Fraternity at Pitt University. The money raised is used for the Family House in Pittsburgh Even though Rob and Rebecca have grown and moved away the tradition continues.

Kistaco Farm
3403 Balsiger Road, Apollo, PA
About:
In 1922 Claude R. Yerger and Bertha Kimmel Yerger purchased 120 acres in Kiskiminetas Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Shortly after they moved to the farm, they named it Kistaco (Kiss/tuh/koe) Farm, which is an acronym derived from Kiskiminetas Township, Armstrong County. Before 1923 they planted their first apple trees.
Over the next 30 years, Kistaco Farm produced everything from milk, hogs, and eggs to fruits and vegetables. Apples were then, as now, the main crop.
In 1950 William L. Hileman, who had worked on the farm from the age of 10, went into partnership with Mr. Yerger. In 1957 Bill married the Yerger’s youngest daughter, Lois Jean. By this time the farm had transitioned to strictly fruit and vegetable production.
Through the 1960s and early 1970s Bill and Jean Hileman took the business from mainly wholesale to direct marketing by establishing Kistaco Farm’s first on-site farm market. They also attended many weekly farmers’ markets including Heidelberg, Greensburg, and East Liberty.
In 1986, shortly after graduating from Penn State, Timothy W. Hileman, Bill and Jean’s oldest son, went into partnership with Bill.
In 1996 Tim and his wife, Suzanne, became the owners of Kistaco Farm. Currently they, along with the help of their oldest daughter, Miranda, continue producing apples, cider and many other seasonal fruits and vegetables on the 235-acre farm.
