Bohlayer's Orchards
1621 Farmers Valley Road, Troy, PA
About Us:
David and Heather Loomis are honored to be the fifth generation to work the family farm. David grew up on the farm and after high school attended Susquehanna University. He earned his Masters at Bucknell University and is currently employed as a school psychologist. Heather received her Bachelor of Arts from Susquehanna University and worked with the Department of Music at Susquehanna University. In 2005, they made the move to Farmers Valley and started managing the farm business in 2006. In addition to maintaining an off the farm job within the public school school system, David enjoys working on the farm. Heather does the daily work around the farm including pruning the orchards, picking and sorting fruit, operating the store room, and managing the care for their flock of sheep. They have dedicated themselves to providing naturally grown tree fruit and to conserving Romeldale CVM sheep.
History:
Bohlayer’s Orchards was established in 1876 when Fred Bohlayer and his wife Laura purchased the land located in Farmers Valley, Troy, PA. Fred believed in hard work, but prided the success of his operation in that he “farmed with his brains”. Fred’s farm was considered by contemporaries as a paying property, devoted largely to the production of fine fruit. During his tenure, Fred acquired additional property expanding his orchards to included other area farms and an orange grove in Sanford, Florida. Fred and Laura raised eight children of which two became orchardists.
J. Ernest and his wife Loretta Bohlayer were the second generation to manage the farm. In addition to the orchard, Ernest and Loretta continued the self-sustaining farm with a dairy, a flock of sheep (approximately 100), a substantial poultry farm, pigs, and bee colonies (which were kept by his son, John). Loretta continued to be an integral part of the orchard especially as the farm passed to their son John. Apart from childrearing and orchard work, Loretta maintained numerous garden plots which later were maintained by Florence.
As the third generation, John and Florence Bohlayer brought the farm’s focus to fruit. John was considered an innovator and master craftsman who erected the current fruit storage and sales room complete with functioning cold storage. This allowed fruit to be stored and sold directly from the farm as opposed to barreling and shipping the fruit. Florence played a significant role in the operation picking, grading, and packing fruit as well as operating the store room.
To continue the family tradition, John and Florence’s nephew, David Loomis, Sr. and wife Ellie became the 4th generation of Bohlayer’s Orchards. Dave and Ellie relocated from Williamsport where Dave had acted as chairperson and teaching professor within the Psychology Department at Lycoming College. In 1976, Dave and Ellie observed the orchard’s 100th anniversary of ownership by operating a farm comprised of 30 acres of apples, 3 acres of pears, 3 acres of peaches and acreage to support a flock of 50 sheep.
Many of our customers have been visiting the farm for generations. Each autumn we look forward to seeing those familiar faces as well as welcoming new customers with whom we share the experience of family heritage and agriculture.

Blyler Fruit Farm
7922 Route 25, Spring Glen, PA
Blyler Fruit Farm had its beginning in Valley View, PA. John and Agnes Blyler were the parents of Elmer Blyler. Elmer and Alberta began the Farm Market at its present location, one mile East of Gratz on Route 25, in 1940. In 1961 Elmer purchased his parents' farm at Valley View, which was then planted with apples and pears. The two farms are nine miles apart. The Valley View farm is located in Schuylkill County and the Gratz farm is located in Dauphin County. The acreage has remained at about 125 acres of cropland. Seventy-five of these have consistently been planted in tree fruits. The remaining acreage is in rotation of strawberries and vegetables. In 1998 Elvin and John Blyler, sons of Elmer and Alberta Blyler, formed a partnership to continue the farm operation.
The Blyler Fruit Farm has apples available almost year round. We currently grow and carry 13 varieties and can store 25,000 bushels of apples. We also carry a variety of other fruits and vegetables, including peaches, nectarines, apricots, strawberries, plums, pears, cherries, sugar peas, pumpkins, turnips, and more.

Ashcombe Farm and Greenhouses
906 West Grantham Road, Mechanicsburg, PA
About Us
Ashcombe Vegetable Farm was started in 1956 as a wholesale vegetable farm principally growing blueberries, asparagus, strawberries, sweet corn and other vegetables. About 1961 a small roadside stand was set up to sell vegetables grown on the farm.
In a year or so, several small greenhouses were added to grow spring bedding plants. From this small beginning of 25 acres of vegetables and two or three greenhouses, the present business emerged. Glenn and Mary Ellen Gross were the founders of the organization, renting the land from Mr. Henry Thornton, owner of Ashcombe Farms.
For a number of years, the Grosses worked with one or two helpers, plus seasonal workers, to plant the flowers and vegetables, trim blueberries, harvest asparagus and do the many chores that such an operation requires. Over the years, the vegetable farm doubled in size and fruits and vegetables were purchased from outside sources to sell at the constantly changing roadside market. Major expansion occurred between 1970 and 1978. A fire destroyed a number of buildings in 1974. The rebuilding of the product department took place in 1975 and a fire protection (warning) system was installed.
In 1977, a tract of land was purchased along with buildings, at Shermans Dale, including a greenhouse owned by Glenn's father and redesigned for growing spring bedding plants. The Ashcombe facility had started to grow foliage and flowering plants. Selling both wholesale and retail, the business filled the available land with greenhouses. As the business grew during the 1970's, garden supplies and dried flowers were added to the already thriving plant and produce business. Later a gift shop was added. In 1983, a small bakery came into being in the produce department (at the main store).
On May 22, 1989, a devastating fire completely destroyed the retail store. Through the efforts of many dedicated employees, the operation was continued in the parking lot on a reduced scale until the present architecturally designed facility was built with enlarged departments throughout, enabling increased products and services in each. This new complex was ready for use in March 1990, a thrilling time for everyone involved.
Ashcombe is an ever-changing operation with quality products and services in all departments, including a full bakery, deli and gourmet foods, plus expanded garden supply, perennials, and a well-stocked nursery from spring into fall.
Ashcombe continues to be a viable part of the community, providing employment to many full time and part time staff and seasonal employees.
Strites' Orchard Farm Market and Bakery
1000 Strites Road, Harrisburg, PA
History:
Strites' Orchard Farm Market and Bakery is a 300-acre sustainably grown fruit and vegetable farm. We are a fourth-generation family- owned and operated business.
The Strite family has been farming in the Harrisburg area since 1843. The first fruit trees and vegetables were planted by Joseph C. Strite in 1914. His son Earl would eventually join him in the business and over time expand the farm to over 250 acres. Earl sold his produce at markets in the city of Harrisburg and door to door in nearby Hummelstown. In 1950 the original market was opened on the farm. Earl's sons Joe and Tom joined their father on the farm and expanded vegetable plantings and added greenhouse operations. All three received the honor of being named Master Farmers over the course of their careers. In 1994 a new farm market and bakery were built and the farm was expanded to 300 acres. 2011 will be the inaugural year for our CSA which will allow us to deliver produce throughout the greater Harrisburg area to participating members.
