Known as bunker to Long Island fishermen, menhaden is likely the fish that Squanto taught the Pilgrims to bury in the ground with their seeds. It was known as “munnawhatteaug,” meaning that which fertilizes, and the English name became menhaden. Learn about this important fish, the history of its use, and its connection to Fire Island.
