NYC Discovery Lab October: Civics in NYC
Sunday, October 20, 2024 from 11:00am to 04:00pm
Museum of the City of New York
1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street
Join us on weekends in October as we dive into the power of civic engagement in NYC. Inspired by our exhibition Changing the Face of Democracy: Shirley Chisholm at 100, we will explore how New Yorkers have shaped the city by making their voices heard through voting and community action with drop-in activities for kids ages 5-12 and adults!
This month at the Discovery Lab explore the civic process by taking a closer look at Brooklyn-born politician Shirley Chisholm’s campaign posters from her historic presidential run in 1972. Discover how voting works by testing your civic knowledge with our trivia wheel and explore the tradition of button-making.
- Pick up a scavenger hunt to explore historical objects throughout the Museum and find out how New York City’s communities created change through civic empowerment.
- Discover the tradition of button-making and create your own button to champion the changes you would like to make.
- Learn about Shirley Chisholm’s 1972 run for president and create a campaign poster to spread awareness for causes you care about.
