In this rough-and tumble classic, actually filmed on-location at the Georgia State Prison, the cons are the heroes and the guards are the heavies. Burt Reynolds plays one-time pro quarterback Paul Crewe, who is now behind bars after a series of controversies. The sadistic warden of the prison (Eddie Albert) taunts Crewe into helping his semiprofessional team of guardsmen win a championship game by creating a team of inmates to use of fodder. But the license to pound on their hated guards inspires the cons to build a winning team.
