Schedule:
7:30 pm - 9:30 pm: Russell Malone Quartet at Outpost Performance Space
Scheduled to perform at Outpost during the pandemic, Russell Malone is one of the most gifted guitar players to emerge in recent years, guitarist Russell Malone, was born in Albany, Georgia in 1963, and grew up in a church environment that had a big influence on his music. Recruited by Sonny Rollins and Diane Reeves (with whom he performed at the NM Jazz Festival in 2007) for “his singular tone, refined listening skills, limitless chops and efflorescent imagination” he is known on the international circuit for his world-class quartet and trio and is also a long-standing member of Ron Carter’s Golden Striker Trio. With his swinging, straight-ahead style, weaving elements of blues, gospel, and R&B, Malone is comfortable in a variety of settings and has performed with such diverse artists as Jimmy Smith, Branford Marsalis, Bucky Pizzarelli, Cyrus Chestnut, Patti Austin, and many others. Early in his career, he became a member of Harry Connick Jr.’s big band, appearing on Connick’s 1991 album, Blue Light, Red Light and worked throughout much of the '1990s and 2000s with Diana Krall, appearing on her recordings as well performing with Roy Hargrove’s Latin Grammy winning Crisol band. He has also appeared on albums of Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride and Ron Carter. Malone also performed at the 2008 NM Jazz Festival with Dianne Reeves.“A consummate musician capable of both swinging hard and caressing a ballad like few guitarists today can.... whether he's slipping into an intimate ballad or launching into a swaggering soul-jazz freakout, Malone keeps listeners hanging onto his melodies.” (Matt Collar, All Music Review). Kurt Rosenwinkel called Malone “an absolute master, the best of the best,” while Benny Golson wrote, “Russell Malone bypasses the ear and goes straight to the heart!” Accompanying Malone tonight will be Richard Germanson, piano; Vincent DuPont, bass; & Neal Smith, drums.
