7:30 pm - 9:30 pm: Michael Anthony-Paul Gonzales Quartet at Outpost Performance Space

The Michael Anthony-Paul Gonzales Quartet returns to Outpost to kick off the 18th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival and they’ll be playing their signature Bebop, Standards, Latin, Blues, Funk and originals! The quartet, which has been playing together for 10 years now, features Michael Anthony, guitar; Paul Gonzales, trumpet; Asher Barreras, bass; and Arnaldo Acosta, drums. Since moving to New Mexico in 1980, Michael Anthony has been one of the most respected and sought-after guitarists on the scene. He spent twenty years in Los Angeles working in recording studios with artists like Blue Mitchell, Hubert Laws, the Louie Belson Orchestra, Quincy Jones and many others and also played with the Gil Evans Orchestra, accompanying Miles Davis at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Anthony has recorded ten CDs and three jazz guitar books and was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New Mexico Music Awards in 2014. Paul Gonzales began his professional career in 1984 as Jazz Trumpet Soloist with the Army Band of New England. He has worked extensively in New Mexico, including with the groups Tetragon, Son Como Son, and Jackie Zamora’s Brazilian Jazz Quintet featuring Michael Anthony and more. Gonzales has backed up nationally touring Jazz, Salsa, and Pop artists for the past 25 years and he taught the adult & youth jazz classes at the Outpost for about 10 years. He was also host of KUNM’-FM’s All That Jazz show every Monday for 13 years. Currently, besides his group performing tonight, he is also a member of Baracutanga, the New Mexico Jazz Latino Orchestra, and the Doug Lawrence y Sus Nuevo Mexicanos band.
