Spines, thorns and prickles (and there is a difference) aren't everyone's favorite part of a plant, and they may even send some of us running away screaming. But plants with vicious vegetative characteristics can be highly functional, making great barriers for keeping out unwanted guests, as well as providing safety, protection and habitat for all manner of garden creatures.
