Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park

Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (60,000 acres) is one of the few remaining large wilderness areas in the Midwest. Home to towering old-growth hemlock-hardwood stands, roaring waterfalls and spectacular sweeping vistas.

Activities:

Boat Rental: Canoe and kayak rentals are available May 25 to October 15 at the concession store located near Union Bay Ccampground on M-107. Call 906-885-5612.

Cross Country Ski: The park maintains 42 km of groomed cross-country ski trails. Trail grooming is supported by donations to the park.

Disc Golf: An 18-hole course is available within the Porcupine Mountain Ski Area. The course is free and discs are available for rent at the park’s campground store located near the Union Bay Campground on M-107. Call 906-885-5612 for more information.

Downhill Skiing: The Porcupine Mountain Ski Area boasts 200 acres of downhill skiing, 12 runs and a 641-foot vertical drop. The longest run is 1.25 miles long.

Fishing: There are numerous fishing opportunities in the park. Natural brook trout habitat is found throughout the Porkies watershed.

Hiking: The park is home to 90 miles of hiking trails. In the park, you can also hike portions of the North Country Trail and Michigan's Iron Belle Trail.

Hunting: The entire park is open to hunting during established seasons with a few exceptions. Popular game species in the park are white-tailed deer, black bear and ruffed grouse. Please call the park at 906-885-5275 for restrictions.

Paddling: The rivers and streams are shallow rock bottom and are not recommended for paddling,

Pet-Friendly Area: Pets are welcome in all other parts of the park, including trails, campgrounds and along the shoreline. Pets must be on a leash no longer than six feet and under an owner's immediate control at all times. Pets are not to be left unattended. Please clean up after your pet.

Swimming: A one-mile stretch of sandy beach along Union Bay offers the best swimming in the park; however, it is not a designated swimming beach and contains no buoys. Swim at your own risk.

Winter Camping: Winter camping is allowed in the park's backcountry.
