Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, MI
We've mentioned the Grand Hotel before, but there's no denying that heading out to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is one of the greats in Michigan getaways. With all but a handful of vehicles forbidden on the island and a host of attractions awaiting, getting away from it all becomes a lot easier in a place that's not only geographically, but also ideologically, separate from much of the world.
Four Winds Casino, New Buffalo, MI
While you've got no shortage of casinos in Michigan for those who want a taste of a gambling getaway, but the Four Winds in New Buffalo has a few special extras going for it. One, it's home to an impressive buffet that changes with the day of the week. Saturdays, for example, are home to the prime rib and crab leg buffet, which is exactly what it sounds like. There are also the Celebrity Suites, a special set of rooms including one that comes with its own waterfall.
Frankenmuth, MI
Not only is Frankenmuth home to one of the biggest Christmas-based attractions around in Bronner's Christmas Wonderland—which means a getaway to Christmas at any time—but also a host of hotel options, restaurants, and other exciting—often German-themed—options too. From Bavarian-style rooms to Bavarian-style meals, a little slice of Bavaria at Christmas awaits visitors to Frankenmuth.
Marquette Area Blues Fest, Marquette, MI
If you're looking for a great trip on Labor Day weekend, consider a run up to Marquette's Mattson Lower Harbor Park and the Marquette Area Blues Fest. Friday's concert lineup will cost viewers nothing at all, while complete passes can be had for as little as $45. A weekend of blues in the Upper Peninsula makes for quite a getaway.
Au Sable Light, Grand Marais, MI
You'll have your choice of getaways here, as several lighthouses offer similar opportunities. Au Sable Light in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers travelers the option to stay in former lighthouse keepers' quarters, and even volunteer services in helping keep the lighthouse up and operating. That can make for an exciting getaway doing something so very different that many might not have thought it could be done at all.
Take on Michigan's Adventure
Of all the things Michigan has, perhaps the least expected is an actual amusement park. While not on the same level as Ohio crown jewel Cedar Point or a Disney property, Michigan's Adventure in Muskegon offers roller coasters, a water park, and all the activities that generally come along with an amusement park. So for a thrilling getaway, Michigan's Adventure might be just the place.
Great Wolf Lodge, Traverse City, MI
Head on up to Traverse City to beat the heat, or to beat the cold, in Great Wolf Lodge, one of the greatest indoor water parks around. No matter what weather you're making your getaway from, or even just boredom, the park features a host of water-related attractions from water slides to soaking tubs and pretty much everything in between. A host of food options is also on hand, and when in Traverse City, there's no shortage of other options on hand.
Bay Harbor Inn, Petoskey, MI
While in Petoskey—more specifically, the Bay Harbor district—those who stay at the Bay Harbor Inn have some downright staggering options in terms of pampering and spa-based options. There's a complete package geared specifically toward fall, as well as more a-la-carte service ranging from hot stone massage to what's known as the “hot toddy for the body” treatment involving cinnamon and vanilla exfoliation, a chai soy mud mask, scalp massage and vanilla bean lotion application.
Drummond Island
As we discovered earlier, an island makes a terrific getaway. Naturally removed from the mainstream, it's a getaway point that exists on its own terms. Drummond Island, however, doesn't just stop at being an island. It also boasts a complete golf course, along with “stay and play” packages to help ensure that your getaway is complete. With dining and assorted resort options thrown in, including some ATV options.
