Sometimes you just need a classic sandwich at the deli counter. You’re in luck if you live in Maryland, or are visiting, because we have plenty of fantastic delis to choose from. Some are small family joints while others are larger, but all are neighborhood favorites. Here are our 5 favorites.
Chick & Ruth’s Delly, Annapolis, MD
Chick & Ruth’s is famous throughout Maryland and is a must-visit spot for locals, politicians, and visitors. Their breads and pies are handmade, the shakes are to die for, and the sandwiches and burgers make you want to come back. Some to try are the Super Duper Colossal Burger that is stacked three high or the Lt. Governor “Boyd Rutherford” seafood club with crab and shrimp. They even do the pledge of allegiance twice a day, every day, so you can feel patriotic while eating your omelet.
Chesapeake Grille & Deli, Dunkirk, MD
They are all about the Old Bay seasoning here. This is a deli, Maryland-style. Order the crab cakes for a true taste of Maryland. IF you aren't in the mood for crab, their sandwiches are fantastic and the B.B.L.T takes a classic favorite to a whole new level by adding smoked pork belly to the traditional BLT.
Rosenfeld's Jewish Delicatessen, Ocean City, MD
Visit Rosenfeld’s for matzo ball soup and corned beef. This is a Kosher deli where everything is made from scratch, old-school style. This is the type of deli you remember from childhood and you are sure to be thrilled by the smells, sights, and tastes that greet you upon ordering a classic sandwich, fresh bread or desert. They also cater locally.
Lenny’s Delicatessen, Owings Mills, MD
The sandwiches are enormous here so you will never leave hungry. They have been awarded the “Best of Baltimore” for their second location in B-Town and have continued to earn numerous accolades. This is a New York-style deli where everything is fresh, huge, melts in your mouth and delicious. Their tuna melt is fantastic, by the way.
The Deli at Pecan Square, Salisbury, MD
This deli is known just as much for local catering as for being the best spot to drop in for lunch. Once you have tried their sandwiches and salads, pick up a catering menu and avoid the hassle of cooking for your next birthday party, work event, or church gathering. Also, for a real Maryland treat, try the crab cake sandwich and fries.
