The Westminster Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) is hosting a dedication ceremony for a Maryland highway roadside historical marker to recognize the Bruceville Encampment of General Anthony Wayne and the Pennsylvania Line that occurred on May 28, 1781. This is an event 243 years in the making! Everyone is invited to celebrate a significant Revolutionary War encampment here in Carroll County, Maryland.
Under orders from General George Washington, General Wayne led the Pennsylvania Line from York, Pa. through Carroll and Frederick County, Maryland, crossing the Potomac at Noland’s Ferry and into Virginia to reinforce French General Marquis de Lafayette. During the summer of 1781 Lafayette, leading Wayne and others, harassed the British throughout Virginia eventually leading to the historic British surrender at the Battle of Yorktown.
During their march to Virginia, Wayne and his troops stopped south of Taneytown in Bruceville and camped along Big Pipe Creek. Bruceville was founded by Maryland Militia officer Colonel Normand Bruce.
