Join Dr. Nitana Hicks Greendeer-educator, linguist, and researcher-for an engaging look at the critical connection between language and culture. The Wôpanâak language has been in a process of reclamation for over 30 years and in 2016 Weetumuw School was opened to bring the language to Wampanoag children. “Through the work of introducing language to the youngest members of our community, we have discovered much about our culture and ourselves, and the effort has been an exercise in self- determination,” says Hicks Greendeer.
Wampanoag children have been given the unique opportunity to experience an education that supports their whole selves, a model which all children deserve, and that will have lasting impacts for generations, undoing the effects of educational and generational trauma, and opening the door for decolonization.
This event is a sponsored professional development presentation of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's
Education Department and is offered free to the public.
