Pride Month Author Talk: Sandra Faiman-Silva (PFLAG Cape Cod Partnership)
Kick off Pride month at Highfield Hall & Gardens with PFLAG and Sandra Faiman-Silva, discussing her book Courage to Connect: Sexuality, Citizenship, and Community in Provincetown.
Sandra L. Faiman-Silva’s The Courage to Connect traces the transformation of the well-known Cape Cod community of Provincetown from its nineteenth century origins as a Portuguese fishing town to its present status as a welcoming, sexually diverse tourist enclave.
This book explores the history of the Portuguese ethnic community and the local economy, as well as the intersections between gay and straight culture in public education, local government, and the police. Capturing the pathos and joy of a community that has struggled to accommodate radical social changes, The Courage to Connect serves as a model for understanding how communities can model themselves to overcome their differences.
Dr. Faiman-Silva, is an author, activist, and Professor Emerita at Bridgewater State University. She has published articles on Indian gaming, youth and culture, and Provincetown and has received numerous awards. She lives in Falmouth, Massachusetts, where she is active in the town’s “No Place for Hate” campaign and in other peace and justice causes.
