Mountain biking isn’t a pastime for the faint of heart. Rugged tires and various gears help you ascend mountain trails and make your way back down again. These 10 Massachusetts mountain biking trails will give you a workout, but the fun—and the scenery—are well worth the effort! 


Savoy Mountain State Forest, Florida, MA

The most extensive trail system for mountain bikers is located in Savoy Mountain State Forest. You’ll ride through thick woods and will connect with a road that takes you to a fire tower on Border Mountain. The views from there are spectacular, and it’s a nice place to take a breather.

Ashburnham Rail Trail, Ashburnham, MA

Perfect for mountain biking, the Ashburnham Rail Trail is 1.3 miles-long and features a dirt surface. You can access the trail at either end—Central Street/SR 101 and where Willard Road meets Turnpike Road.

Blue Hills Reservation, Milton, MA

Enjoy a 30-minute mountain bike ride at Blue Hills Reservation. The trail makes a loop, and ascends 520 feet. You may obtain a trail map at the Ranger’s Station.

Bradley Palmer State Park, Topsfield, MA

Featuring rolling trails interspersed with some flat stretches, Bradley Palmer State Park is perfect for mountain biking in the summer and fall. Since it is also used for horseback riding, slow way down and be courteous if you come upon a horse and rider. 

Manhan Rail Trail, Easthampton, MA

Even though it’s paved, the Manhan Rail Trail connects to other trails in the community. Six miles in length, you’ll see plenty of beautiful sights in Pioneer Valley.

Village Park/Abrams Rock, Swansea, MA

Featuring five miles of challenging track for mountain biking, Village Park/Abrams Rock may be manmade, but it’s quite a challenge. The single track ascends to a 40-foot elevation.

Harold Parker State Forest, Andover, MA

Featuring approximately 35 miles of trails, mountain bikers will experience everything from roots to rocks to lots of hills. The higher trails will take you up about 96 feet.

Willowdale State Forest, Ipswich, MA

Avid cyclists can bike 40 miles of trails at Willowdale State Forest. Ride along the Ipswich River or deeper into the woods, but be ready to enjoy lots of variety in the terrain.

MTB Trails at Milford, Milford, MA

Located within a large open space, MTB Trails at Milford is perfect for mountain bikers of all levels.  The intricate network of trails is owned by the New England Mountain Bike Association. They suggest you park at the nearby Wendy’s, but they also suggest making a purchase to express your gratitude before leaving.

Thunder Mountain Bike Park, Charlemont, MA

If you’ve never taken a lift to the top of mountain bike trails, it’s because there’s only one place that features it in all of New England. Thunder Mountain Bike Park features a Sky Trac Quad, and trails going back down—including jumps—for all levels.
