Flute and Piano Music from New England, with Carl Gutowski and Ana Glig

Flutist Carl Gutowski and pianist Ana Glig present a program of works for flute and piano by composers from throughout New England, both old and new. Featuring compositions by Edward MacDowell, Amy Beach, Aaron Copland, Arthur Foote, Quincy Porter, and Jonathan Russell.

  

Carl Gutowski is a flutist based in New York’s Hudson Valley and Cape Cod, MA, performing in solo and chamber music settings for over 30 years. Carl is also the Concert Manager of the Howland Chamber Music Circle in Beacon, NY, which presents chamber music concerts by world-renowned musicians in the historic Howland Cultural Center. 

  

He holds a B.A. in Mathematics from Vassar College and an M.S. in Computer Science from Tufts University. During his studies, he also pursued music extensively. His principal flute teachers were Tacy Edwards of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, William Hebert of the Cleveland Orchestra, and renowned soloist John Solum. He performed in master classes for Paula Robison, Ransom Wilson, Maurice Sharp, and Lady Jeannie Galway. 

  

Recent performance highlights include Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall; the Cultural Center of Cape Cod; the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall; the National Opera Center in NYC; the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, DC; the Chapel Restoration in Cold Spring, NY; the Howland Cultural Center in Beacon, NY; and the Cape Cod Museum of Art. 

  

Carl’s live performances have been featured on WQXR (NYC); WOMR (Provincetown, MA); WMHT (Hudson Valley); and WPRB (Princeton, NJ). Carl won first prize in the National Flute Association competition; was the runner-up finalist of the Syrinx Flute Competition (London); placed 3rd and won the Audience Favorite Award of the Boulder Bach Festival’s World Bach Competition (Community); and won the SME Festival Concerto Competition. 

  

Ana Glig (Gligvashvili) is an award-winning Georgian-American pianist praised for her ability to “capture hearts” (Musical America Worldwide). Glig’s playing is recognized for her “lovely expressiveness, clarity in legato, balance, and perfect logic.” (Pfister Lois, Chatham Music Club Gala Reflections, 2023). 

  

A recipient of the Alfred Cortot prize at the Tbilisi International Piano Competition for the best interpretation of romantic music, Glig has performed internationally in Europe and the United States in solo and chamber music settings. As an orchestra soloist, Glig debuted with Georgian and Israeli symphonic orchestras and, most recently, with the Cape Symphony and the Cape Cod Chamber Orchestras, performing Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals and J. S. Bach’s D Minor Keyboard Concerto. In solo recital settings, Glig was recently featured in the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert series in Chicago, Illinois. 

  

Glig is a founder of the multi-media concert series MusArt Interconnections, which focuses on synthesizing live performances of classical music and visual art. Glig received her master’s degree in piano performance from Mannes School of Music -The New School (NYC) and an Advanced Certificate in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from New York University (NYU Steinhardt). She completed her bachelor’s degree in piano performance at Tbilisi State Conservatoire (Republic of Georgia). Glig is the Music Director at the First United Methodist Church in Chatham, MA. She lives on Cape Cod, MA, where she continues performing and teaching.
