FIR 5K
The Fitness In Recovery (FIR) program is the next extension of Berkshire Running Foundation’s ongoing work. Working with the local hospital, rehabilitation center and local community centers, Berkshire Running Foundation will be offering a health and fitness program for those in recovery, as well as for their supporters and families.
Spectrum Health staff and clients are working with us in creating a program that offers a free, safe, sober and supportive environment for anyone who would like to introduce fitness into their lives. The Fitness In Recovery model is a proven benefit in helping individuals deal with the issues surrounding any type of recovery; whether it be from substance abuse, anxiety, depression, grief, food issues, or being a caregiver to someone in recovery.
Using the proven Lemme Run Program, participants will be led thru a six-week program with the goal of completing the FIR 5K run on September 24. Each participant will have an experienced coach to help guide them throughout their training. After completing the program, clients are encouraged to stay on and train to become a coach themselves. The FIR program structure is a proven and successful template that has been developed around the world. Implementing exercise, in addition to a recovery program, has a profound impact on each participant in physical improvement, social engagement and the success of their recovery.
