From June 3 to 29, the Hosmer Gallery of the Forbes Library will host a retrospective exhibition of the career of Northampton photographer Stan Sherer. An opening reception will be held Saturday, June 8, 2–4:30 pm.
The exhibit will include Sherer’s early photographs on the streets of New York City and later photographs of Northampton’s shopkeepers, Massachusetts farmers, and the Northampton State Hospital. It will also include images from Albania, China, France, Israel, the Philippines, Russia, and West Africa, showing how Sherer has depicted daily life in varied cultures.
Sherer is an independent photographer, fine art digital printmaker, and filmmaker in Northampton. He holds an MFA from the University of Massachusetts. He has exhibited across the United States as well as in Europe and China, and has published seven books of photographs. He is donating his photographic work (prints, negatives, and digital files) to the Special Collections and University Archives of the W.E.B Du Bois Library at the University of Massachusetts, and to the Forbes Library.
