An Art Exhibit By the People, For the People
With citizens gearing up for the election and examining our individual values, The PEG Center for Art & Activism presents "This Is America 3," an art exhibit by the people, for the people. The artists explore the multifaceted essence of the American experience through creative expression. Whether highlighting triumphs or tribulations, celebrating diversity, or examining social issues, the artists delve into the complexities of life in the United States.

Artist Jamaal Eversley and Gallery Director/Arts and Culture Producer Claudia Fiks curated the art in "This Is America 3," along with PEG Center Executive Director Paula Estey. This is the third edition of "This Is America." It was originally hosted at The Nearby Gallery in Newton, MA, in 2023, then featured at Boston City Hall in the Scollay Square Gallery earlier this year from June through July in production with the Mayor's Office of Arts & Culture.

"'This is America 3' explores our country through the heart, soul and eyes of more than 25 artists. Each piece speaks a narrative. Each piece pulls, pushes and releases," said Estey.

"We were ecstatic to secure two sculptures called The Watchers by special guest artist LaVaughan Jenkins that stand sentry in the PEG Center windows. The figures address the national discussion about racism and abuse of force by law enforcement. They serve as a stand-in for protectors and protestors of every color who march and fight against white supremacy, as well as the experience of those who have suffered at the receiving end," she added.

Eversley said the exhibit is designed to provoke thought among gallery goers. The paintings, sculptures, and photographs reveal the intricate tapestry of our country. "Challenge yourself to look beyond our own perspective. Together, we can work towards a future of America that supports all citizens unequivocally," he said.

According to Eversley, "We try to show the good, bad, beautiful, and ugly of America. We are doing this as a community to uplift, not tear down. Unity through diversity of voice and thought brings success to the whole. This is the People's Art Movement. This Is America!"

Date: October 11 to December 20, 2024.
