Bayou Segnette State Park

New Orleans’ next door neighbor, Jefferson Parish, is home to Bayou Segnette State Park with outdoor activities galore. It’s best known for its wave pool, where children can ride inflatable floats through choppy waters, and there are more serene options for park visitors as well. The surrounding ecosystem is alive with a wide variety of swamp citizens (read: alligators, nutria and bald eagles). Boaters, whether motorized or self-propelled via kayak, can explore the bayou. Hikers can enjoy views of the cypress-tupelo swamp on foot. Overnighters can choose from RV spots, a spot to pitch a tent or grab one of the brand new cabins. The cabins, built in the Summer of 2016 are floating cabins, complete with a porch to fish off of and outdoor fish cleaning sink.

Anglers especially will enjoy Bayou Segnette’s unique combination of both freshwater and saltwater fishing opportunities. Thanks to these waterways, more than 300 different animal and plant species coexist. For those looking to cast a line, that means there’s plenty to catch in the preserve — most all of them perfect for the plate. Bass, trout, redfish, catfish and perch are all swimming the waters of Bayou Segnette.

Nearby attractions include the sights, architecture, food and music of New Orleans (just 15 miles away!), Jean Lafitte National Historical Park & Preserve, NOLA Motorsports Park and the plantation museums of River Road.
