Salt Festival
Sunday, October 20, 2024 from 10:00am to 05:00pm
Salt Festival
Big Bone Lick State Historic Site
3380 Beaver Road
Journey back in time as Big Bone Lick returns to days long past. The festival features demonstrations of European settler living and skills, frontier ingenuity, traditions, and lifeways. Browse the crafter's corner to see the many unique and hand-crafted items for sale and find lots of good eats at the food court.
Enjoy folk and bluegrass music, listen to a storyteller, view prehistoric artifacts, and watch traditional Native American drumming and dancing. See how salt was extracted from the springs of Big Bone, explore environmental education, and watch a flintknapper make a stone point.
School Day is back for 2024! On Friday, October 18th, schools may enjoy the festival at a reduced rate with preregistration and prepayment of tickets. School day is open to the public. Contact claire.kolkmeyer@ky.gov to preregister your school! The children's area is returning for the 40th annual Salt Festival!
Activities include a petting zoo, haybale climbing, pumpkin painting, games, and more! (Free pumpkin included with admission for children's ticket). Children's area limited on School Day (10/18), pumpkin painting only offered on Saturday and Sunday. While visiting the park, be sure to drop by the park's museum and visitor center to see some of the "big bones"; a shuttle service will transport event-goers to and from the festival field, the visitor center, and the campground at regular intervals. Don't miss seeing the bison herd, the park's living link to the Ice Age
