Nishna Heritage Museum
The Pottawattamie Indians were the only inhabitants of this area along the "Nishnabotna River" until 1847. At this time the "Mormons" had lost favor in Nauvoo, Illinois, and came west for their new home. When they reached the Missouri River, all did not settle in "Kainesville" (now known as Council Bluffs), but they scattered and found homes in nearby locations. One of these locations was "Big Grove" (now known as Oakland) Later most of them migrated farther west, eventually to "Utah"
