Food Bank Of Iowa

About Us

The Food Bank of Iowa's mission is alleviating hunger through food distribution, partnership, and education.

The Food Bank of Iowa, founded in 1982, is a private, non-profit charitable organization whose mission is alleviating hunger through food distribution, partnership, and education. The Food Bank of Iowa solicits, receives, inventories and distributes donated food and grocery products. These products are distributed to partner agencies in 42 Iowa counties who directly serve needy families and individuals through a variety of programs. As a non-profit food bank, our primary role is to provide food to the charitable agencies offering direct service to hungry Iowans. In fiscal year ending 6/30/2009, the Food Bank of Iowa channeled 5,103,762 pounds of donated food to these agencies.

This network includes organizations such as: food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, shelters for victims of domestic violence, non-profit day care centers, residential care centers and child and senior programs.

The Food Bank of Iowa maintains a 53,000 square foot warehouse containing more than 45,000 square feet of dry storage, more than 48,000 cubic feet of freezer space and substantial cooler space. In addition, a 24-foot refrigerated truck and cargo van are available for pick-ups and deliveries. Our ability to accept frozen and refrigerated products allows us to offer a better variety of nutritious foods to our partner agencies and the people they directly serve.

Besides traditional foodbanking the Food Bank of Iowa has sucessfully implemented two programs: HUSH and Backpack Buddies.
