The Atlanta Wind Symphony presents a free concert featuring the 2024 AWS high school concerto competition winner, flutist Grant Peng, performing the first movement of Mozart's Concerto No. 2.

    • Concerto No. 2 in D Major, movement I: Allegro aperto, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, transcribed and arranged for symphonic band by Ervin Monroe, featuring flute soloist Grant Peng

    • Toccata Marziale by Ralph Vaughan Williams, ed. Frank L. Battisti

    • Symphony No. 3 "Organ Symphony" Second Movement by Charles Camille Saint-Saens, trans. Mark Hindsley

About the Atlanta Wind Symphony (AWS)

The Atlanta Wind Symphony is celebrating its 44th season as an all-volunteer community wind ensemble dedicated to delivering inspiring performances of quality wind band literature. Comprised of more than 70 adult musicians ranging in experience from music educators to hobbyists, the group has performed at Carnegie Hall and has received the John Philip Sousa Foundation's Sudler Silver Scroll, North America's most prestigious award for community concert bands. The AWS also received the honor of being selected to perform at the 2021 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, the world’s largest instrumental music conference. Atlanta Wind Symphony Music Director David Kehler serves as Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Kennesaw State University where he oversees all aspects of the University’s expanding band program; teaches courses in instrumental conducting, symphonic repertoire, and wind literature; and serves as Music Director and Conductor of the KSU Wind Ensemble. AWS Associate Conductor Chris Shumick is in his 12th year as the Director of Bands at Milton High School, where his bands consistently win top honors at festivals and contests. About the high school concerto competition winner

Grant Peng is a 17-year-old flutist from Atlanta who currently studies under Prof. Angela Jones-Reus. Since beginning flute studies at the age of 11, Grant’s accolades include being the winner of YoungArts National Competition - Classical Music, Pelican International Music Competition for Young Artists, a finalist for the MTNA national auditions, the winner of the Atlanta Flute Club Junior Artist Competition, the two-time winner of Georgia Music Teachers’ Association, and the Samuel Fordis Concerto Competition. Grant currently serves as section leader of the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony and was first chair for the Georgia All-State Band 2020-2023 and the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra. Grant has also attended various renowned festivals, including the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Orford Music Academy, and Governor’s Honor Program. Grant is currently a senior at Northview High School, headed to Duke University. Outside of music, Grant is the captain of his school tennis varsity team winning the state championship in 2022.
