ABOUT THE MUSEUM

The Lake Mary Historical Museum exists to preserve and promote the history of the city and the surrounding area. Efforts to maintain and enhance the museum are accomplished by members of the Lake Mary Historical Society and other volunteers.

The museum houses a collection of artifacts, photographs, documents and other materials related to the history of Lake Mary and the surrounding communities. The artifacts housed in the museum have either been donated or are on permanent or temporary loan.

THE BUILDING

The museum building was built in 1926 by Frank Evans to serve as a community center and provide offices for the Lake Mary Chamber of Commerce. The building was used as Lake Mary's City Hall after the city was incorporated in 1973, a function which it fulfilled until 1990 when the current City Hall was completed.

The museum began in 1994 in a small room at the back of the building. The rest of the building was used  as a gathering place for the City's seniors. The first librarian for the museum was volunteer Margaret Wesley. The museum now occupies the entire building, which has been designated as a National Historic Trust landmark.

THE FUTURE

The vision for the Lake Mary Historical Museum is to have it serve as a focal point for cultural activities and events that will bring the community together and promote and preserve the history of Lake Mary for present and future generations. A project was started in late 2006 to  increase community awareness of the City's rich history and has so far resulted in the establishment of a new business plan, a monthly schedule of exhibits and events, the launching of this website, and a number of other related initiatives.
