Fiesta Latina

Fiesta Latina!, a celebration of Hispanic cultures featuring music, dance, and food, will take place

"Our goal is to celebrate Hispanic culture through community programming and through sharing objects from the Peabody's collections about those cultures. The aim is to move this from a one- day event, to a series of events throughout Hispanic Heritage month at various community venues, which culminate in a weekend at Junta and at the Peabody Museum" said Andrea Motto, YPM's director of education.

"We at Junta for Progressive Action are thrilled to continue our collaboration on this celebration of Latin American cultures. This event is a powerful reminder of the rich heritage that unites our community, and we are excited to bring everyone together for a weekend filled with music, dance, and cultural exchange," said Cheila Serrano, Director of Programs at Junta for Progressive Action.

The festivities will begin at noon with a performance by Proyecto Cimarron, a Puerto Rican Bomba performance group. The Spanish Community of Wallingford's youth mariachi band and dance troupe, committed to preserving the cultural heritage of Mexico, will take the stage at 1:30 pm. Tere Luna, a singer who specializes in the romantic genre of bolero music, will perform at 2:30 pm. The show will conclude with Orquesta Afinke, a salsa band based

Proyecto Cimarron (Bomba)

United by their love of Afro-Latino culture, Proyecto Cimarron, a Puerto Rican bomba performance group based in New Haven, are committed to preserving and sharing bomba rhythms. The dance and music style evolved during Puerto Rico's history of African slavery under Spanish rule 400 years ago, and continues to be a way to fight for racial justice and social justice.

Spanish Community of Wallingford Youth Mariachi Band and Dancers

Through its amazing Mariachi performances, the Spanish Community of Wallingford helps to add to the mosaic of American life by enabling all Latinos to share the culture of their native countries.

Tere Luna (Bolero)
2:30–3:00
Singer Tere Luna recalls childhood family gatherings where great music, food and the traditions of her native Mexico grew her artistic aspirations. It was there she fell in love with Bolero. "The Bolero is a key to the deepest emotions of one's soul. Its musical cadence and lyrics also have a way of evoking the most romantic and pleasant memories of love. The Bolero celebrates life and love in both its happiest and saddest of moments," Luna said.

Orquesta Afinke (Joyful Mix of Styles)
3:30–5:00
Afinke is a traditional Spanish slang term used by musicians to describe a group that plays together. The musicians in Orquesta Afinke toured with many notable performers across the world. They decided to come together to share their joyful musical repertoire of styles, including Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Boleros, Plena, Latin jazz and much more. Join them at the Fiesta and get ready to dance!
