CT Trails Day: Quarry Park Family Nature Walk
Saturday, June 01, 2024 from 09:00am to 10:00am
Connecticut Forest and Park Association
283 Russell Street
This small city park was once frequented by the Quinnipiac. The small quarries in the park and larger ones beyond it yielded many local home foundations and served as building material for structures such as the old stone church in East Haven and the lighthouse at Lighthouse park in New Haven. Quarrying lasted from late 1700s to early 1900s. A dinosaur fossil (Aetosaurs) was found in late 1800s near the park edge by quarrymen and resides in the Peabody Museum. Geologic formations are evident in several areas near the trail. Forest restoration is ongoing in the park to remove invasive plants and replant natives.
