Delve into the remarkable world of food pathways and cultural landscapes in this unique, day long workshop. Guided by Reyna Banteah (Zuni) of Ts'uyya Farm, Katrina Blair of Turtle Lake Refuge, and Crow Canyon's own Rebecca Renteria, you'll embark on a field trip into the San Juan Mountains while learning about past and present ecosystems, then return to the high desert to create and sample delectable treats at Crow Canyon's campus near Cortez, CO. Throughout the day we explore the cultural significance of plants, and ethics of gathering while learning about essential nutrients, and how cuisine with wild foods boosts our vitality, provides medicine, and feeds our souls.

Highlights
- Learn about local ecosystems and food sources in the mountains and high deserts of southwestern Colorado.
- Better understand the relationship of Indigenous food pathways to cultural landscapes.
- Have FUN creating and sampling delicious foods that continue to be part of Indigenous cuisine.

Itinerary

8:00 a.m. Meet at the Holiday Inn Express parking lot in Cortez, Colorado. Load into Crow Canyon vehicles and spend the morning hiking in the San Juan Mountains. Reyna, Katrina, and Rebecca guide you through the forest identifying plants and sharing their knowledge of ethics and stewardship. Out of respect for Ancestral Lands, we will sample delicious pre-prepared snacks from Turtle Lake Refuge along the trail and will not be gathering plants in bulk.

In the afternoon, retrieve vehicles and head over to Crow Canyon's beautiful 170-acre campus for food preparation demos and sampling. We will use source verified foods that were gathered responsibly from private lands and local wild gardens. Hands-on engagement with food preparation will be encouraged in small break-out groups, but not required. Expect to take home several small bites and a pamphlet of recipes to guide your personal journey in Wild Food Cuisine.

Program ends at 5:00 p.m.

Limited space available and advanced registration required.
