Celebrate Nisei Week in the historic Little Tokyo District in Downtown Los Angeles.
Schedule:
9:00am - 5:00pm: Los Angeles Tanabata Festival at Japanese American National Museum (JANM)
The Los Angeles Tanabata Festival was founded in 2009 by Yoshito Yonezawa. It brings a taste of the summer festival from his hometown in Miyagi Prefecture to Little Tokyo. View the colorful paper decorations called kazari to celebrate the folk story of two lovers who meet once a year in the sky!
10:00am - 5:00pm: Cultural Exhibits at JACCC
Cultural exhibits such as bonsai, calligraphy, Ikebana, and more will be on display inside the JACCC.
12:00pm - 6:00pm: Nisei Week DEKOCAR SHOW at Nishi Hongwanji
Anime Fans & Tuners, brace yourselves! Nisei Week DEKOCAR SHOW shines into Little Tokyo Los Angeles.
1:00pm - 5:00pm: Nisei Week Karate Exhibition and Tournament
Shotokan Karate of America’s Nisei Week Karate Exhibition and Tournament began in 1957 when Mr. Tsutomu Ohshima gave the first official demonstration of karate to the American public. Now the oldest karate demonstration in the United States, come witness history as fighters and participants converge in Los Angeles from dojos nationwide and abroad to compete and give individual and group demonstrations.
7:00pm - 9:30pm : Coronation at Aratani Theatre
The Nisei Week Queen and Court are officially crowned in an exciting program and production at the Aratani Theatre!
The coronation program is set to be memorable, with co-hosts actor Tamlyn Tomita and David Ono, ABC7 Eyewitness News anchor.
