Comedy, lawah dawah productions and multifaceted ent, Ages 10+, 40 mins, United States of America
Blacks In Space is a sci-fi action-adventure dramedy that documents the plight of the Floyd family as they journey into the outer reaches of the galaxy. The production is influenced by the cultural movement of Afro-Futurism while also paying homage to classic tv series like Star Trek (1966) Lost In Space (1965) And Firefly (2002). Films Like Empire Strikes Back(1980) and the use of the "space opera" genre to tell intimate and nuanced stories also influence the series. The play will be 40 minutes long and will take place entirely on the NS4-SRK 4000 space shuttle. Prepare yourself for this immersive experience unlike anything you’ve ever seen.
It is the year 2046, and Earth has become virtually uninhabitable for Black people due to racial violence, climate crises, and ongoing health threats. The Second Civil War has led to turmoil and unregulated police militias hunting and killing Black people. In a last-ditch effort for survival, renowned Veteran Astronaut August Floyd agrees to embark on a maiden voyage to a distant planet, Lurid, with his wife, two kids, and cranky uncle. He’s been recruited by his former supervisor, Admiral Reeves, who warned him the situation on Earth will only worsen with time if they don’t take extreme action. Reeves believes August can be the Marcus Garvey of his time by leading his community to a safer place where they can not only survive but truly prosper and thrive.
