The American Cinematheque is thrilled to pay tribute to the iconic French filmmaker and novelist, Catherine Breillat, with a 14-film retrospective celebrating her as one of the seminal and most uncompromising voices of French cinema over the last half-century. A professor of auteur theory herself, Breillat has established her own place in film history by creating stylized masterpieces which speak to themes of female sexuality, sexual politics, and the silence that fills the space between adolescence and womanhood.
In French with English subtitles.
Desire and the law become endlessly entangled in Breillat’s drama about a gruff 50-year-old cop named Georges (Claude Brasseur) who finds himself helping a criminal (Claude-Jean Philippe) whom he has known since they were young. Enlisting a junior colleague, Didier (Nils Tavernier), to keep an eye on the criminal’s family, Georges simultaneously begins an affair with Didier’s young wife Barbara (Lio), and consequently the situation these characters are embroiled in grows ever messier.
